March 4, 1933

F.D. Roosevelt is president of the United States: on March 4, 1933, at the height of the Great Depression, Franklin Delano Roosevelt is inaugurated as the 32nd president of the United States. In his inaugural address, Roosevelt outlines the “New Deal,” the expansion of the federal government aimed at encouraging job creation and wealth, and states that the only thing Americans have to fear is fear itself. Although criticized by certain financial circles, his progressive legislation improved the American economy, and in 1936, Roosevelt is re-elected with great success. He wins two more terms, in 1940 and 1944, thus becoming the longest-serving president in US history.
