Alexander Dahl, with his hydrogen balloon, was the first to rise high enough above the ground (11,300 m) to photograph the curvature of the Earth. In 1935, it was surpassed by the American manned probe Explorer 2 (22 km) and then by the V2 rockets in 1947 from New Mexico (110 km).
