Asteroid 1862 Apollo, approximately 1.7 km in size, is discovered in the asteroid belt. It is later lost (how can you lose an asteroid?) and rediscovered in 1973 (!). It is a NEO (Near Earth Object) that will give its name to an entire class of NEOs: the Apollo asteroids, which even reach Earth’s orbit. One of these Apollo-class asteroids struck Earth in 2013, crashing in Chelyabinsk, Russia.
