Minnesota. Charles Lockwood is the Last Man Standing of 89 soldiers of the Stillwater Guards, or Company B of the 1st Minnesota Volunteer Infantry. They fought in the Battle of Antietam, and only 43 of them survived. After the Civil War, they agreed to meet at the same restaurant every year, where a bottle of Burgundy is set aside for when only one of them is left alive. Lockwood is the last man standing; he opens the bottle and announces that it has turned to vinegar. The table where he sits is surrounded by dozens of empty chairs. He dies on October 4, 1935, at the age of 93.
