Turkey. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk abolishes the caliphate. Religious courts are abolished, and Sharia law is replaced by a civil code based on the Swiss model. It will be reestablished in parts of Syria and Iraq the following century by Caliph Al Baghdadi in June 2014, after 90 years.
