Soviet Union. Following the divide-and-conquer policy, Soviet Central Asia, or Turkestan, was divided into five republics belonging to the USSR: Kazakhstan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, the borders completely unnatural and arbitrary. Islam was banned, Arabic schools were closed, and local languages were henceforth written in Cyrillic rather than Arabic.
