During World War I, the Hashemite clan in the Arabian Peninsula collaborated with the British, who promised to place them in power after the fall of the Ottoman Empire. But this promise was also made to the Saud clan, stationed in Kuwait. Immediately after the war, the Sauds defeated the Hashemites, and the British handed over control of Arabia to the Sauds, hence Saudi Arabia, and gave the Hashemites control of Iraq, which they ruled until 1958, when they were ousted in a military coup.
