6:29 a.m.: Austria is now defeated; the Viribus Unitus, the Austrian flagship, has just been given to the newly formed Kingdom of Yugoslavia; but two Italian sappers are ordered to mine it off the coast of Pola, in Istria; immediately after the operation they are captured, Italian is spoken on the ship (Venetian was still the main language of Austro-Hungarian sailors) and the imminent end of the war is celebrated (Austria-Hungary has already offered to surrender); the sappers are invited to join the celebrations; they try in vain to warn of the bomb, then dive into the water; there is panic; only the new (two-day-old) admiral remains aboard the sinking ship.
