The concepts of stimulated emission (a photon with the correct energy can cause an electron to move up in orbit or down and emit a photon) and spontaneous emission (the electron spontaneously moves down in orbit and emits a photon) mature; the first phenomenon will be the basis of the concept of lasers and masers.
