Serbian student Gavrilo Princip commits the assassination of Prince Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo; the prince was visiting the Bosnian capital, a province of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, despite warnings of possible attacks; the prince escapes an initial assassination attempt with a hand grenade, then on the way out of the city, the driver accidentally takes a wrong turn and, while maneuvering, stumbles upon a second Serbian sniper, part of the conspiracy, who improvises and shoots him, killing the prince and his wife; the assassin dies in an Austrian prison in 1918. Prince Franz Ferdinand was not in favor of a war with Serbia and supported the creation of the United States of Austria-Hungary with borders similar to those seen after the war.
