China. Nationalist leader Sun Yat-Sen is proclaimed president of China after the fall of the last dynasty, the Qing. Just six weeks later, he cedes power to the commander of the armed forces, Yuan Shikai. He too fails in 1916, and power falls into the hands of local governors and district military commanders, while the Communist Party maintains a sort of shadow government.
