The French Jewish banker and philanthropist Albert Kahn, inspired by a trip to Japan, decided to create a color (autochrome) photo album of the world’s peoples. He collected 72,000 photographs and 100 hours of film in his “planetary archives.” They reveal a dazzling variety of clothing and hairstyles. In less than a century, willingly or unwillingly, virtually all the planet’s peoples had adopted Western dress.
