Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Geronimo, chief of the Chirikawa Apache tribe, dies. He had been captured for the last time thirty years earlier after holding his own against the U.S. Army for thirty years. He was then deported first to Florida, then to Alabama, and finally to Oklahoma, where he converted to Christianity and became a successful farmer. He also participated in President Theodore Roosevelt’s inaugural parade in 1905 and published his memoirs in 1906: Geronimo’s Story of His Life.
