Rebirth of the Olympics. On April 6, 1896, the first Olympic Games of the modern era were held in Athens, reviving the ancient Greek tradition banned 1,500 years earlier by Roman Emperor Theodosius I. The initiative was initiated by French Baron Pierre de Coubertin, who served as president of the Olympic Committee from 1896 to 1925.
