Theodor Herzl’s “The Jewish State” (Der Judenstaat), published in 1896 in Vienna, is the programmatic manifesto of the Zionist movement. Written as a response to the growing anti-Semitism of the second half of the 19th century, it represented the “sacred text” to which Jews throughout the world referred. In response to Herzl’s call, they sought to build a homeland for themselves and their children in the land of their fathers.
