Thomas Alva Edison applied for a patent for the talking phonograph and stunned the examiners, who, having nothing to compare it to, granted it without question. A few months later, on April 10, 1878, the Daily Telegraph dubbed Edison “the Wizard of Menlo Park,” a label that would stick with him even after he moved to New York.
