Historian Allen Koeninsberg, in agreement with the editors of the Oxford English Dictionary, attributes the word “hello” to Thomas Alva Edison, who coined it to answer the telephone in place of the older “hallooo” or the “ahoy” preferred by Alexander Graham Bell.
