Alexander Graham Bell and his associates unsuccessfully attempted to sell the telephone patent to Western Union. They then reluctantly decided to found the American Bell Telephone Company. At the time, the main ways to make money from patents were to create a monopoly, sell patent licenses, or sell the patent and make an immediate profit.
