Levi Strauss, a Bavarian-born haberdasher, and Jacob Davis, a tailor from Reno, patented the use of copper rivets to fasten pockets on miners’ overalls, which we now call “jeans.” They used denim fabric produced by the Amoskeag mill in Manchester, New Hampshire, made from American cotton dyed with American indigo. Levi’s factory was located in San Francisco.
