Japan. After lengthy negotiations, four daimyo, who had inspired the Meiji Restoration, were persuaded to donate part of their lands in Edo (present-day Tokyo) to the Emperor. The imperial attitude changed completely: the Emperor, during his 45-year reign, made 102 trips outside Tokyo, to the rest of Japan, compared to only three trips in 265 years during the Tokugawa Era (1603-1868).
