1871 – 1873

Iwakura Mission. Fifty Japanese government representatives travel to the United States and then to a dozen European countries, aiming to understand and capture the best innovations, technologies, customs, and practices that could improve Japan. They meet with President Grant and several European leaders and produce a five-volume report. Already in the war between Prussia and France in 1870, Japan had sent observers to understand how Westerners waged war.
