Thomas Alva Edison, only four days in New York, arrives at the offices of the Gold & Stock Reporting Telegraph Company, his rival in Boston, just as the transmitter has just jammed, sparking widespread panic. He tells the owner, Samuel Laws, that he knows how to fix it; he does so and is hired immediately. Within months, Laws triples his salary and appoints him superintendent of the entire operations department.
