Parisian gardener Joseph Monier incorporated wire into the concrete of his own pots. This allowed him to use (reinforced) concrete in a relaxed state. Previously, concrete could only be used in compression (which was how it was used by the inventors of concrete: the Romans). Concrete thus became one of the most widely used materials in civil engineering.
