The first reliably functioning transatlantic cable between Europe and the United States, laid by Brunel’s steamship, the Great Eastern. This time, at Thomson’s suggestion, each individual cable segment was tested for purity and conductivity, and the amount of copper was three times greater: 365 tons in seven cables. Furthermore, a connection was completed to a cable abandoned the previous year, creating a redundant cable, providing greater security for the company’s shareholders.
