Another attempt to lay a transatlantic telegraph cable between Ireland and Newfoundland: 3,000 km and 6,000 tons. The ship departed England with 550 men, 12 draft oxen, 1 cow, and pigs. Just as they were almost finished laying the cable, it snapped. Perseverance paid off with complete and lasting success the following year, with yet another attempt.
