General Robert E. Lee’s exhausted and starving Army of Northern Virginia is surrounded by overwhelming Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant near Appomattox, Virginia; sitting on a log, Lee tells General Porter Alexander that he sees only one solution: surrender. (Alexander had instead proposed starting a guerrilla war by hiding in the woods; by rejecting this proposal, Lee made perhaps his greatest contribution to peace.)
