Chemist Angelo Mariani, reading an article by Paolo Mantegazza (a doctor who returned from Peru in 1859), realized the economic potential. He created Vin Mariani, a wine treated with coca leaves. Pope Leo XIII was one of its enthusiastic consumers and even awarded Angelo Mariani the Vatican gold medal.
