2:00 a.m. Ferragut’s sailors silently prepare to break the Mississippi blockade, but the Confederates soon realize what’s happening, and a terrible battle breaks out, with 400 cannons thundering simultaneously over a 2-mile radius for about an hour. After numerous losses, the Union fleet manages to pass and joins forces with the Union troops: New Orleans is surrounded. Fort Jackson and Fort Philip surrender within a few days.
