General Stonewall Jackson breaks through the Union lines at Front Royal, in the Shenandoah Valley. This allows him to move north of Washington, D.C. This prompts a call for volunteers from the Union to defend the federal capital, while, on the other side, the Confederate capital is also threatened by the Unionists.
