The U.S. Navy begins a naval blockade of the main Confederate ports to strangle the South economically and militarily. The blockade will last, with varying degrees of success (it was leaking…), throughout the conflict. By the end of the war, thanks to the war effort, the Union navy will have 671 warships or auxiliary vessels: one of the largest in the world.
