Cialdini acted quickly and decisively, entering the Papal States from Romagna and Umbria and immediately attacking enemy strongholds. It was striking that in the Piedmontese camp, even among Catholics, there were no qualms about fighting against the Papal State. A Piedmontese Catholic commander, Della Rocca, wrote of having a priest shot in Perugia for firing on his men, adding that he had no remorse.
