Henry Bessemer invented a unique pear-shaped furnace, used in industrial steelmaking to reduce excess carbon in molten pig iron produced in the blast furnace. It was the first furnace to allow steel production in a single process step. Also known as the Bessemer furnace or Bessemer process, it was later followed by other converters, all based on the Bessemer process, correcting its disadvantages.
