Crimea. Battle of the Tchernaya River. The French and Piedmontese engage the Russians. The Allies prevail. The Piedmontese suffer 14 dead and 156 wounded, including General Montevecchio; the French suffer 181 dead and 1,224 wounded; while the Russians suffer so many casualties that they take two days to evacuate them. After the Tchernaya, the Tsar’s generals will no longer attempt attacks against enemy lines.
