After Stephenson’s Rocket in 1829 (the first steam locomotive), Western Europe was already a dense railway hub with over 40,000 km of railways. In contrast, Asia, Africa, and South America as a whole still had only 4,000 km of railways combined. The first railway in China was laid in 1876, and was built by Europeans. The Chinese government had it removed the following year.
