Rome. Roman Republic. Garibaldi surrenders to the French siege and leaves the city, delivering his famous speech in St. Peter’s Square, which ends with: “…Whoever loves Italy, follow me!” Garibaldi intends to reach Venice, which is still fighting with the Austrians. The phrase, “I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears, and sweat,” has been described as a paraphrase of one uttered on July 2, 1849, by Giuseppe Garibaldi when he gathered his revolutionary forces in Rome: “I offer hunger, thirst, forced marches, battles, and death.” As a young man, Churchill had considered writing a biography of Garibaldi.
