Rome. The French breached the walls, but Garibaldi and Manara incredibly managed to dig in a few hundred meters behind, prolonging the battle. But the battle’s fate was sealed, and with it that of the Roman Republic, attacked by those who should have been its allies, nipping in the bud a story of Italian unity that could have been very different and perhaps more straightforward.
