Piedmont. Massimo D’Azeglio becomes prime minister and remains so for over three and a half years. Together with King Victor Emmanuel II, he will be the guarantor and promoter of a liberal regime, uniquely maintaining in force, among the Italian states, the Constitution and Statute granted in 1848.
