1834

The new president of Mexico, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Ana, wielding semi-dictatorial powers, abolished the Federal Constitution of 1824 and established a highly centralized power. This immediately irritated the Texan settlers, who saw all autonomy stripped away. An insurrection broke out in Texas. After defeating the Mexicans at San Giacinto, the Texans achieved independence, in theory, but not in practice. The American appetite for Texas later contributed to the war with Mexico and the subsequent annexation, with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California to the United States.
