Venezuela. Bolivar’s forces fought the decisive battle at Carabobo, south of Puerto Cabello. 6,500 republicans fought against 5,000 royalists loyal to Spain. The subsequent victory, in which British volunteers played a key role, left Bolivar with a vast territory he called Gran Colombia. It included New Grenada, Venezuela, Colombia, Panama, Ecuador, and a small portion of Amazonian Brazil.
