Hamburg. After the enthusiasm of a few weeks earlier, as soon as the Russians arrived, the volunteers now dwindled, and the Swedish troops, allied with the Russians and commanded by Bernadotte, were forced to surrender to Napoleon’s French forces without a fight. This was one of the episodes in which, at the time, the Swede Bernadotte’s willingness to fight was questioned, for a cause he perhaps didn’t believe in and for an alliance he was part of only for the future benefit of Sweden against Denmark.
