Napoleonic Italy reached its final form and was divided into three states: the Kingdom of Italy, the Kingdom of Naples, and the territories directly annexed to the French Empire: Piedmont, Liguria, Parma, Tuscany, Umbria, and Lazio. The laws and administrations, however, remained essentially the same, precisely Napoleonic in nature. For the first time in many centuries, Italy was effectively united.
