The average Englishman’s annual sugar intake rose from almost zero in the 17th century to over 8 kg at the beginning of the 19th century. This was all thanks to sugarcane plantations in the Americas. Working conditions on these plantations were terrible, and slavery was reinvented: 10 million slaves were imported from Africa, 70% of whom worked on the sugarcane plantations.
