After announcing the possible discovery of a new planetoid, Ceres, the Italian monk Giuseppe Piazzi did not publish any further experimental measurements, partly because Ceres was hidden from the Sun for a couple of months. Then, in July, he published further data confirming the initial sightings, but further confirmation from other astronomers was still lacking, and it would not arrive until December.
