Yorktown, Virginia. 9:00 a.m. A British drummer boy appears on the barricades and shouts, “Parlay! Parlay!” His shouts are barely heard above the roar of the cannon fire, but many see him. The guns fall silent. An officer steps out into the open with a white handkerchief. He is blindfolded and taken to George Washington, to whom he presents Cornwallis’s request for an armistice.
