Yorktown, Virginia. Siege and Battle of Yorktown. This was essentially the final military act of the American Revolutionary War. 9,000 British soldiers (including German mercenaries) faced a land and sea attack by 8,000 American regulars and 3,000 militia, as well as 8,000 French soldiers on 29 battleships. The Franco-Americans, commanded by George Washington, lost 389 soldiers killed or wounded. The British, numbering about 900, surrendered, taking nearly 8,000 prisoners.
