The Liberty Bell is cast from bronze, a mixture of copper and tin in a ratio of 3 or 4 to 1, which is known to produce the best tone when rung. However, it is also notoriously difficult to work and quite fragile. In fact, after crossing the Atlantic safely, the bell cracked from the rim to the center when it was rung for the first time in Philadelphia.
