In his Natural History of Norway, Erik Pontoppidan, Bishop of Bergen, describes a huge sea creature known as the Kraken, the size of an island. It can sink a large ship, but the greatest danger comes from the turbulent waters when the monster submerges. The legend may have been inspired by underwater volcanic activity off the coast of Iceland.
