At the Battle of Culloden, the English had in their ranks the Scots of Clan Munro, the Highland militia of Clan Campbell, and the Clans McKay, Ross, Gunn, and Grant. The Jacobites were three-quarters Highlanders, the remainder Lowland Scots, and a small contingent of French and Irish. Charles Stewart Edwards’ Jacobites were defeated and exterminated by the English army at Culloden; the massacre marked the end of the clan system in Scotland (particularly in the Highlands) for over a century.
