Russian explorer Vitus Bering and his expedition winter on Bering Island, off Kamchatka. They suffer from hunger and attacks by arctic foxes. In revenge, Bering’s men torture the captured foxes, blinding them, and cutting off their tails, before releasing them as a warning to the other foxes. Bering himself will die on the island.
