Battle of Cape Matapan, off the southern tip of Greece. The Venetians suffer heavy losses. The Venetian fleet is enormous: 26 ships with 1,800 guns. They lose 1,824 men. Turkish losses, however, are also very heavy, because they avoid engaging in battle. (By comparison, Nelson at the end of the century at Aboukir used 14 ships and 1,212 guns to defeat the French, against 14 French ships and 1,206 guns.)
